Assessing the potential for restoring freshwater mussels to urban streams

چکیده
Field trials were conducted to assess the potential for stocking native unionid mussels in urban streams of Chesapeake Bay catchment. Juvenile, hatchery-raised placed enclosures at five (two restored and three unrestored) two nearby rural streams. Adult translocated Mussel growth survivorship assessed stream sites individuals maintained hatchery ponds. At all sites, water quality conditions generally suitable with respect temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen. Food resources, as indicated by quantity suspended benthic particulate matter, higher among lower unrestored Positive rates observed both juveniles (caged) adults. fatty acid profiles similar except docosahexaenoic (DHA), which was stocked relative hatchery. Among streams, frequent occurrence high discharge events resulted burial downstream loss enclosures. washout effects less severe. Apart from effects, mortality, presence dead mussels, low (<10%). Overall, provided whereas bed bank instability during a attrition mussels. Conservation efforts may be aided consideration mussel habitat needs design restoration projects. The inclusion projects has facilitate recovery, expand bring greater attention conservation efforts, garner public support preservation health areas.

Assessing and Restoring the Health of Urban Streams in the Puget Sound Basin
Rapid urbanization threatens the biota of streams and rivers around the globe. Efforts to manage urban streams traditionally take an engineering approach focused on stormwater runoff, physical channel condition, and chemical water quality. Our objective was to use the biology of streams—measured with the multimetric benthic index of biological integrity (B-IBI) based on benthic macroinvertebrat...
متن کاملAssessing toxicity of contaminants in riverine suspended sediments to freshwater mussels.
The Clinch River in Virginia and Tennessee, USA, is well known for its diverse native freshwater mussel assemblages; however, notable declines in mussel populations in recent decades have prompted much concern and subsequent research. The authors examined the toxicity of recently deposited sediments on juveniles of the freshwater mussel Epioblasma brevidens by collecting time-integrated sedimen...
متن کاملHost fishes and infection strategies of freshwater mussels in large Mobile Basin streams, USA
We investigated host fishes, timing and modes of glochidial release, and host-attraction strategies for 7 species of freshwater mussels from the Buttahatchee and Sipsey rivers (Mobile Basin), Alabama and Mississippi, USA. We determined hosts as fish species that produced juvenile mussels from laboratory-induced glochidial infections. We established the following primary mussel/host relationship...
متن کاملAssessing the effects of native freshwater mussels on aquatic nitrogen dynamics
Management of the nitrogen cycle has been identified as one of fourteen grand challenges for engineering and is an especially important issue for agricultural watersheds of the Upper Midwest. In large river systems, it has become increasingly important to understand the interactions between abiotic and biotic processes that influence nitrogen cycling. Native freshwater mussels are one of the mo...
